About Tommie

Tommie Shaw began studying classical ballet at a young age where she excelled in technique as well as artistic abilities.  She has continued to study dance ever since.  Tommie was chosen to dance the principal role in her very first dance performance.

Tommie first studied dance in Athens, Georgia both at private studios and then also at UGA, then in Atlanta, Georgia, NY City and then in the Washington, D.C. area.  Tommie performed in theatrical performances such as Camelot as well as other plays and productions.  Tommie studied with some of the finest professional dancers and dance masters in the industry, including Patricia Bromley, who studied and performed with world renowned Choreographer and Dance Master, George Balanchine.

Additionally, Tommie was a child musician, and a member of an orchestra for ten years where she excelled at woodwind instruments.  Tommie was the sole recipient of an award for outstanding achievement in music.  She was selected from musicians from (16) elementary schools.  She was also the only child musician invited to attend and perform with the University of Georgia Summer Music Workshop that was developed only for high schools student musicians.

Throughout her life, Tommie studied a variety of dance forms in addition to classical and contemporary ballet, including modern dance, focusing on Graham technique, tap dance, focusing Al Gilbert technique, Luigi jazz dance, contemporary dance,  hip hop, Latin dance, belly dance, African dance, disco dance and breakdance.  Tommie enjoyed intensive Musical Theatre training with an emphasis on Tap dance where she performed in many reproduced Broadway Productions.

Tommie also has extensive performing experience, primarily in dance but also in theatre and music.

Tommie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dance Education from the University of Georgia where she studied and performed with many outstanding professors in the Department of Dance. Her Major at UGA was Modern Dance as well as Classical and Contemporary Ballet but she also studied in the Theatre and Music departments.  Tommie also has a minor degree in Business Administration.

Tommie has decades of teaching experience from young children through senior adults.
